The Living Patterns certification is a five-course professional training program that teaches licensed TCM practitioners to integrate functional medicine laboratory interpretation into their clinical practice using the Five Element framework.
Three courses are universal — every student takes them regardless of clinical focus. Two are specialty-driven — the student chooses their clinical population and goes deep. Everyone enters together, diverges in the middle, comes back together at the end.
Most systems of medicine ask: what is wrong? TCM functional medicine asks something deeper: what is the pattern, and where did it come from?
Course 1 is the foundation of everything that follows — not a preparation for lab work, but a complete framework for understanding the human body through the Five Element system. The yin and yang organ relationships, how they interact, how they support and constrain each other, and how disruption in one system creates cascading effects across the whole. This is TCM physiology taught at the level of clinical reality, not academic abstraction.
Building on the foundational work of Jeffrey Yuen — whose teaching frames biomarkers as expressions of lived experience, not isolated data points — and Randine Lewis’ Spirit of the Blood, which interprets laboratory findings through the qualitative language of Chinese medicine, this course makes those philosophical frameworks clinically operational. You will learn to read the body as narrative: what a patient’s biology is saying about how they have been living, what their system has been compensating for, and where the pattern is heading.
At the core of Course 1 is the correspondence between TCM patterns and biomarkers — which lab values reflect which organ system dysfunctions, which Five Element imbalances leave measurable traces in the blood, and how the ancient map and the modern test are reading the same terrain in different languages.
Central to this framework are the five neuroendocrine axes — the hormonal command pathways that the Five Element system anticipated long before modern endocrinology named them:
– HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal): the stress response axis, governing cortisol and the body’s capacity to adapt to demand
– HPT (hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid): the metabolic axis, regulating energy production and cellular function throughout the body
– HPG (hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal): the reproductive axis, governing sex hormones, fertility, mood, bone density, and cardiovascular health
– HPO (hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian): the female reproductive axis specifically, governing menstrual cycle regulation, ovarian reserve, and hormonal balance across the lifespan
– HPP (hypothalamic-pituitary-pancreatic): the metabolic regulation axis, governing blood sugar, insulin signaling, and energy utilization
These axes do not operate in isolation. When one is disrupted, the others compensate — and eventually fail. The patient with thyroid dysfunction who also presents with anxiety, blood sugar instability, and menstrual irregularity does not have four separate problems. They have one disrupted landscape. Course 1 teaches you to see it as such — and to recognize which biomarkers tell that story before symptoms become disease.
By the end of Course 1 you have a complete physiological map. You understand the terrain. Everything that follows is navigation.
Course 1 gave you the map. Course 2 puts the tools in your hands — and shows you exactly how to use them in the clinic, from the first patient visit to the follow-up report.
This is the clinical reality of everyday practice. Ninety biomarkers across the full basic diagnostic picture: complete blood count, comprehensive metabolic panel, thyroid panel, sex hormones, inflammatory markers, nutrient status, urinalysis, and the four-point saliva cortisol test that reveals how the stress response is actually functioning across the day.
These are not exotic tests. They are the panels sitting in your patients’ files right now, routinely dismissed as “normal” by conventional standards. This course teaches you to read what conventional medicine misses — the patterns in motion, the early signals of dysfunction, the biological story that standard reference ranges were never designed to tell.
At the center of Course 2 is the APART System— the complete clinical framework that organizes everything you do with a patient from intake to resolution:
Ask and Assess — Comprehensive multi-modal intake combining the Ten Questions, pulse diagnosis, tongue diagnosis, Metabolic Assessment Form scoring, and laboratory analysis interpreted against functional ranges. Every system is a suspect.
Prioritize and Plan— Apply 80/20 thinking: identify the 20% of dysfunctions driving 80% of symptoms. Establish root versus branch. Build a treatment plan with clear rationale for every intervention.
Act and Adapt — Implement the plan. Observe outcomes with specific measurable markers — lab values, MAF scores, symptom tracking. Change what isn’t working quickly. Don’t wait six months to know something is failing.
Reassess and Readjust— Retest. Rerun the MAF. Recheck pulse and tongue. Compare chronologically. What improved, what didn’t, what’s emerging?
Try and Try Again— Persistence through complexity. Healing is not linear. Document, learn, and iterate. Build clinical wisdom from every case.
This system is operationalized through the 3-Report Workflow — the Pre-Test Reading, the Results Reading, and the Follow-Up Reading — and the Metabolic Assessment Form, which tracks patient progress in measurable, objective terms between visits.
By the end of Course 2 you don’t just understand 90 biomarkers. You have a complete, plug-and-play clinical system you can implement immediately.
You have the foundation. You can read the basic picture. Now the cases get more complex — and so do the tools.
Course 3 applies the same APART System and 3-report workflow from Course 2 to a more sophisticated diagnostic landscape. The patients arriving at this level of care are the ones who haven’t resolved with standard interventions, whose patterns are layered, whose root causes require deeper investigation. This course gives you the testing tools and clinical judgment to meet them.
The advanced panel includes:
GI Map — comprehensive stool analysis revealing the microbial terrain: pathogens, opportunistic organisms, commensal balance, digestive markers, and intestinal immune function. The gut is implicated in virtually every chronic pattern. This test makes the invisible visible.
Cyrex Labs — the most sophisticated autoimmune panels available, identifying specific tissue antibodies, cross-reactive foods, and early autoimmune reactivity before it becomes diagnosable disease. Essential for Hashimoto’s, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and any complex inflammatory presentation.
Advanced Cortisol and Hormone Testing— moving beyond the basic four-point saliva test into nuanced HPA axis assessment, sex hormone metabolites, and the interactions between adrenal function, reproductive hormones, and metabolic regulation.
Follow-Up and Next-Step Testing— the clinical logic of sequencing. What do you retest and when? What does a partial response tell you about where to look next? How do you use follow-up data to refine the pattern and adjust the intervention?
The APART System now operates at full complexity — cases with multiple overlapping patterns, competing priorities, and slow or nonlinear resolution. This is where clinical wisdom is built, case by case, test by test.
By the end of Course 3 you can take on the patients others have given up on.
Testing without treatment is just expensive curiosity. Course 4 is where the data becomes medicine.
You have identified the patterns. You understand the terrain. You know what the labs are saying beneath the surface of “normal.” Now you build the intervention — a complete, integrated treatment strategy drawn from the full toolkit of TCM functional medicine.
Course 4 covers every therapeutic modality available to the pattern-literate practitioner:
Herbal Therapy — classical and modern formulations matched to the identified patterns. Not symptom-chasing with adaptogens, but targeted intervention at the root. Formulas that shift the pattern, not just manage the complaint.
Dietary Therapy — food as medicine applied to specific pattern presentations. What to eat, what to eliminate, and why — grounded in both TCM dietary principles and functional nutrition. Individualized to the patient’s pattern, not generic clean eating advice.
Lifestyle Interventions — sleep, movement, stress regulation, and circadian rhythm as clinical tools. How to prescribe lifestyle changes with the same specificity and rationale as a herbal formula.
Supplements— targeted nutritional and nutraceutical support for specific biomarker findings and pattern clusters. Evidence-informed, dose-specific, sequenced appropriately within the treatment arc.
Report Writing as Clinical Tool and Revenue Stream — the 3-report workflow fully realized. How to write Pre-Test, Results, and Follow-Up Reports that patients actually understand, that drive compliance, that document outcomes, and that justify your fees. The report is not paperwork. It is the clinical intervention — and it is how you build a practice that generates consistent revenue from every patient relationship.
Course 4 is the course where everything comes together. The map, the tests, the patterns, and now the medicine.
Tao Te Ching Chapter 77 describes what natural systems already know: healthy systems circulate resources. Extraction flows upward. The practitioner who understands this distinction is the one who builds a practice that lasts.
Course 5 is the business course — but not the business course you took in school. There is no insurance billing here, no reimbursement suppression, no working harder for less. This is the architecture of a cash specialty practice built entirely around the Living Patterns Readings model, designed to generate $150,000 or more annually while you do the most sophisticated clinical work of your career.
You arrive at Course 5 with something most practitioners never have: a complete, differentiated clinical system. You can read what others miss. You can explain it to patients in language they understand. You can document outcomes and track resolution. That is the foundation of a specialty — and a specialty commands fees that general practice never will.
Course 5 teaches you to build on that foundation:
The Cash Specialty Practice Model — why cash practice is not a luxury but a clinical necessity for this work, how to price your services, how to structure your offerings, and how the Living Patterns Readings workflow naturally generates recurring revenue through the 3-report system and follow-up testing cycles.
Two Additional Revenue Streams — supplement dispensing and affiliate referrals integrated into your clinical model as natural extensions of patient care, not add-ons. How to build these streams systematically so they generate income independent of your appointment schedule.
Building Your Specialty — how to identify and own your clinical niche, communicate it clearly to prospective patients, and become the practitioner in your market who solves the problems others can’t. Specialization is not limitation. It is the condition of being sought out.
Practice Infrastructure — intake systems, the Metabolic Assessment Form in practice, consultation pricing, patient communication, and the operational mechanics that allow the clinical work to flow without friction.
The $150K Practice Model — the real math of a Living Patterns Readings practice. How many patients, at what fees, with what testing and supplement revenue, adds up to a sustainable, circulation-based practice that serves both practitioner and patient.
The ancient world already understood what sustainable systems look like. Course 5 shows you how to build one.
Each specialty delivers Courses 3 and 4 for a specific clinical population.
• Women’s Health / Fertility — Complete 10-hour course. High-value patients, multiple rounds of testing, long treatment arcs.
• Hashimoto’s / Thyroid — Full CEU program. Two Hay House books. The deepest clinical dataset.
• Stress / Axis Disruption — HPA/HPT/HPG/HPO. The upstream driver. Universal clinical relevance.
• Autoimmune — Lupus, RA, MS, Sjögren’s. The broader autoimmune category.
• Gut / Digestive — SIBO, IBS, dysbiosis, permeability.
• Metabolic / Cardiovascular — Triglycerides, cholesterol patterns, insulin resistance.
• Mental Health / Neurological — Anxiety, depression, brain fog. Copper/B6/methylation/inflammation pathways.
Two new specialty launches per year.
Pre-recorded course modules with scheduled live cohort sessions.
Video content, reading materials, case studies, quizzes. Self-paced progression through each course.
Scheduled meetings where the cohort reviews material, works through anonymized case studies, and builds community. Weekly during Courses 1–2, bi-weekly during Courses 3–4, monthly during Course 5.
Monthly group. Case review, peer support, business growth. The community includes everyone regardless of specialty — because axis disruption means patient populations overlap. Cross-pollination makes the group more valuable, not less.
Three clinical documents that tell the patient’s pattern story in data.
Scored patterns from the 5 Element Assessment Form become a justified testing strategy. The pattern drives the test selection, not the other way around.
Biomarker verification of TCM patterns produces an integrated treatment plan: classical herbal formula with targeted modifications, supplement protocol, dietary strategy, lifestyle prescriptions. Every recommendation cites the specific laboratory finding that supports it.
Chronological biomarker comparison tracks pattern evolution. Proves which interventions resolved which patterns. Documents measurable clinical outcomes.
Students learn to use AI tools as pattern recognition amplifiers within a TCM framework. AI-assisted report generation, biomarker-to-pattern correlation, and longitudinal tracking — always with the practitioner as the clinical authority. The verification standard: every AI-generated pattern claim must be answerable with specific biomarker evidence.
